Beat the Heat: Staying Safe at Festivals in Hot Weather

Nothing beats enjoying your favourite artists under blue skies, but spending long hours in the sun can quickly become dangerous if you're not prepared. Heat exhaustion and dehydration are two of the most common medical issues treated at UK festivals each summer.

If you're heading to a festival, a little planning can make all the difference.

Top Tips for Staying Safe

Stay Hydrated
Drink water regularly throughout the day, even if you don't feel thirsty. Refill your bottle whenever you get the chance and avoid waiting until you're dehydrated.

Protect Yourself from the Sun
Wear sunscreen with a high SPF, reapply it throughout the day and consider wearing a hat and sunglasses to reduce exposure.

Don't Skip Meals
Long days, hot weather and lots of walking can take their toll. Eating regular meals and snacks will help keep your energy levels up.

Take Regular Breaks
Find shaded areas during the hottest part of the day and give your body time to cool down before heading back into the crowds.

Look Out for Your Friends
If someone becomes dizzy, confused, unusually tired or stops sweating in hot weather, move them to a cool area, give them water if they're able to drink, and seek help from festival medical staff immediately if you're concerned.

Enjoy the Festival Safely

Festivals are about making memories, not spending time in the medical tent. By staying hydrated, protecting yourself from the sun and looking after each other, you can enjoy an incredible weekend while reducing the risks that hot weather can bring.
