What Is LOLER?

LOLER stands for the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998. It is UK health and safety legislation designed to ensure lifting equipment is safe to use, properly maintained, and operated correctly.

LOLER applies to equipment used for lifting or lowering loads, including:

Overhead cranes
Forklift trucks
Hoists & chain blocks
Slings & lifting accessories
Vehicle lifts 

Under LOLER, employers must ensure lifting equipment is:

Safe and suitable for the task
Properly maintained and inspected
Clearly marked with safe working loads (SWL)
Used by trained and competent people
Thoroughly examined at regular intervals
